A fantastic day in Sacramento!

I made it to Sacramento!! Phew! It was hard work going over the rolling hills from the Bay Area, but I did it! I remembered Creighton Wong's words from Oakland (an amputee doing a triathlon in New York this weekend): "I never say I can't."

In Sacramento, I was greeted by an amazing force of people who are doing amazing things with their lives. Ranging from ages 18-95, the 20+ people I chatted with were extra-mile extra-milers! Can you imagine volunteering 50 hours a week on top of a 40 hour a week job? Pat Burritt does it with the Community Emergency Response team. How about catching a 6:10 a.m. bus three days a week to volunteer at the hospital? 95-year-old Raynia Kinnistson has done it for 49 years. Christie Holderegger with Operation Backpack (helps kids under the poverty line take new backpacks to school), and Marne Dunn with Women's Empowerment (set up a computer lab so that homeless women can learn technology skills to return to the workplace) are true stars. They both humble me.

You've got to meet inspirational Mitch Ball (MitchBall.com), and a humble Mr. Diggs who teaches kids gardening. Becky Mack plans birthday parties for homeless kids so they have a present and a party even though they won't have a home to take the gift to (Project Birthday). There were just so many great people.

Mayor Kevin Johnson is leading a city dedicated to service and volunteerism (VolunteerSac.com), and he has an amazing volunteer leader in Teri Munger! Thank you, Sacramento! Thank you for going the extra mile...and inspiring me! The city that pushes "Be the Change!" is setting a tone for America...
