San Francisco is a great extra-mile city!

Day #1 of the Tour brought with it a lot of great moments.

I had a chance to meet nine amazing extra-mile Bay Area residents who have devoted themselves individually to some pretty great causes. Over the next few days, you'll be able to see small video clips of some of these people that will be posted on this site. (You can read a little about each under the "Extra Mile Stories" tab now.)

What I would truly like to highlight now, however, are three people and one great organization. Before I started interviewing today, I took the 7:00-9:00 a.m. breakfast shift at Glide. Glide is an amazing organization that feeds people down on their luck...in fact, they feed 600-900 people each meal three times a day. The kitchen staff has 6 people...and the rest is done by volunteers.

Polly, Lori, and Haley were each first-time Glide volunteers (like me!) this morning. They were fantastic! In serving food, they did more than just deliver eggs and oatmeal to hungry people. They also served warm smiles...kind words...and fantastic attitudes.

It was in their smiles, their words, and their attitudes that I also saw the Extra Mile America message in full action. No recognition, early bus rides, and tired arms carrying trays...that's what I call true extra-mile desire.

PS: I had new brakes put on an old bike. The two are a combination it takes some getting used to. As I arrived at Jack London Square this evening, I rode up to my support vehicle...a bit too fast and hard. The result? Spill #1 of the Extra Mile America Tour had me flying over my handle bars! No worries, though. No damage worth reporting...except to my ego!
